Functional planning

When planning changes to your bathroom it is important to consider its existing strengths and weaknesses, what do you like about it and what would you like to change?

There are also some key functional and practical considerations when planning where the components of your desired bathroom will be positioned. Begin by measuring the dimensions of your bathroom. You can then make a plan with the scaled pages supplied as part of the KOHLER bathroom planning and price guide.

Mark on the plan where the existing plumbing and soil pipes are positioned; this is a good start as positioning suite components adjacent to these services will keep down the cost of the installation work.

Think about how you move around the room and the space that is required for each bathroom element (for example you will need space to stand and dry yourself when stepping out of the bath). This will stop you accidentally positioning them too close together.

Some Key Questions:

What are the priorities - eg bathing, showering, family use, special needs?
Do the current facilities come under pressure at certain times of the day, morning 'rush hour', 'evening soak' time?
Do you have adequate showering facilities eg shower separate from the bath, enclosures big enough to use in comfort, are they conveniently positioned for the main users?
Could you create an extra space to fit a luxury bathroom by removing an existing wall eg between bathroom and separate WC or converting an adjoining cupboard into a shower, for example?
Is the bath big enough to soak away the cares of the day? Could a hydrotherapy bath turn your bathroom into a home spa?
Do you have enough storage for the necessary bathroom items that you do not wish to have on display?
Are the main bathroom fixtures best positioned for ease and comfort of use?
Does the lighting enhance or detract from the atmosphere?
